How to decide what book you should write

books writing Jan 15, 2024

A lot of content creators wonder…

“What book should I write? I want to get a book out there, but what will I write about…?”

Let’s decide the answer to THAT question in this quick post.

Which camp are you in?

You’re in one of three groups.

๐Ÿ˜ณ Option 1 = You’re not sure what you want to say

๐Ÿ˜‡ Option 2 = You know EXACTLY what you want to say

๐Ÿคฏ Option 3= You have too many things to say— you’re not sure where to get started!

For our purposes here, let’s treat groups 1 and 3 the same…

(As odd as that might sound, there ARE some similarities.)

Dial it in…

Your message is often found in the gap between what you know— that you may even take for granted— and what others want and need to know.

Here are a few questions to help you hone in on the message.

โ‰๏ธ What advice do people regularly ask you for…?

โ‰๏ธ Related to the above, what is something you find yourself repeating… even if you’re not asked?

โ‰๏ธ What is something you have a different perspective on and think, “Wow, if only people knew….?”

โ‰๏ธ What are you excited about— so passionate about you would do it or talk about it even if you never got paid for it?

โ‰๏ธ What do you already get paid to do?

As we brainstorm through these questions, we discover that there’s a definite area we have “extra” knowledge— more than the average person. We may not yet realize its value, but there’s a knowledge base we have that others lack.

The book— or even the course and the coaching program you can create— is often located in that “gap” between that others know and what you know— which, again, you likely take for granted.

I often tell teachers and content creators, “Your message solves a problem AND/OR leads people towards their potential.”

And, yes, that can come in many forms. Ultimately, though, you accelerate their learning curve and bring them to where you are— in the area of your expertise.

Still not sure?

By the way, if you’re in group 3— and have “too many ideas,” begin with the one that—

๐Ÿ‘‰ you’re MOST excited about (which enables you to stay focused)

๐Ÿ‘‰ you can finish the fastest (which enables you to move to others ideas)

๐Ÿ‘‰ you can use as part of your business (as a lead generator, as an intro to your framework, as an explanation or training resource, etc.)

And, once you begin a book, DO NOT begin another one until you TOTALLY finish the first. Google suggests 99% of all first-time writers FAIL TO FINISH the book. Commit to completion… which is easier if you only do one at a time.
